The Planning & Zoning Commission is comprised of 5 regular members and 3 alternate members appointed by the Town Council for a three year term. The Commission meets on the second Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers The Planning & Zoning Commission is responsible to discharge the duties specified in Chapters 124 and 126 of the General Statutes. This involves evaluating new applications for compliance with existing regulations as well as maintaining and updating those regulations. If you are considering volunteering for the PZC, please consider the prerequisites below to help guide what is expected from a successful member of the commission. 1. Experience reading maps or plans. The technical process of evaluating applications requires reading and understanding maps describing topography, driveways, and drainage. Commissioners are expected to be able to accurately read and understand these documents. Prospective commissioners could consider the UConn Land Use Academy Basic training for an overview of the required skills - https://clear.uconn.edu/lua-old/basic-old/ 2. Demonstrated experience in land use. Candidates should expect to be able to document experience in a related field in order to demonstrate their ability to successfully execute the job of commissioner. Relevant experience could include a wide range of applicable skills such as architecture, legal experience, engineering, or real estate. 3. Time commitment. Prospective volunteers should expect to need to spend several hours (and sometimes more) preparing for each meeting. All applications include significant documentation that commissioners are expected to have reviewed prior to each meeting. While the commission has regular meetings once a month, special meetings with higher frequency are not unusual. 4. A willingness to learn. Zoning is defined by state statutes and legal precedent, both of which are constantly evolving. Commissioners are expected to not only complete mandatory training minimums but also be willing to stay up-to-date with this changing landscape. A successful commissioner will need to keep an open mind to how these changes can affect applications, regulations and the town. The Commission meets on the second Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers Their meetings are open to the public and residents are encouraged to attend. meetings are open to the public and residents are encouraged to attend.
