MOTION to overspend 10120101-51630 (Public Safety Employees) to allow for the hiring of one police officer candidate in FY25 to replace two officers planning retirement in FY26.
Background:
The department has received information from two senior officers of their intention to retire from town service in FY26. Each would begin terminal leave in August/September 2025.
The process to replace a certified police officer is lengthy and takes approximately 10 months after a candidate successfully completes the statutory requirements for selection. Town of Ledyard Ordinance 500-001 allows the department to exceed its authorized staffing to employ probationary officers in advance, to replace officers who have submitted an intent to retire or resign.
The department is finalizing selection process which includes two qualified candidates for the position of probationary police officer. We have secured two seats in a training academy session which commences on March 14, 2025. The salaries for these candidates are not included in the department’s budget for FY25.
Department Comment/Recommendation:
The department respectfully requests the granting of a motion to overspend 10120101-51630 (Public Safety Employees) in the current fiscal year to pay the salaries of two probationary officers from March 2025 through June 30, 2025.
