Notes: Whit Irwin has been a resident of Ledyard, moving here in 2005 as a Coast Guard Officer and having raised his family in Ledyard since then. He married Holly (née Robertson) and has three children: Conor (deceased), Gretchen (17), and Charles (1). A graduate of the United States Coast Guard Academy in 1992, Whit served 23 years with distinction: earning his wings of gold in 1996 and an MS in Computational Operations Research from The College of William and Mary in 2004, and promoting to Commander before retiring from the Coast Guard in 2015. Although he served two years as a Deck Watch Officer at the beginning of his operational career as a rescue helicopter pilot. His personal awards include the Coast Guard Meritorious Service Medal, the Coast Guard Commendation Medal (3 awards), the Coast Guard Achievement Medal (3 awards), and the Commandant’s Letter of Commendation (4 awards). After his military retirement, he taught high school mathematics briefly for the Marine Science Magnet High School in Groton, CT, started a second career and currently works as an Operations Research Analyst at Sonalysts, Inc in Waterford, and also enjoys teaching Statistics at Connecticut College as Adjunct Faculty. Whit served Ledyard as an active member of the Ledyard Board of Education (BOE) in 2020 and 2021, helping to guide the District during what was arguably the most challenging portion of the COVID-19 pandemic. As a member of the BOE’s Finance, Policy, and Diversity and Inclusion committees, he drafted and edited policies for the future of the District, recommended allocation of funds, and had a strong hand in crafting the Ledyard School District’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Statement, driving overarching guidance for the benefit of all members of the District. With a fistful of ideas, a bias for action, a modest amount of decorum, and a dash of irreverence. Whit is a pragmatist with a strong desire to assist the Town of Ledyard and looks forward to future opportunities. e-mail: wirwin@ledyardct.org
