OLD BUSINESS
Future Projects Discussion.
1.
Chairperson Kohrs said that Rotary Club Grant requests are due on May 15, 2026. She asked for
ideas for projects.
Route 12 Corridor upgrades -
The area between Fireside Plaza, Gales Ferry and Route 12 has a stretch of open space. This area
would look better with some plants. Easy to maintain plants such as hydrangeas, tulips, daffodils
and irises to cover the summer and spring seasons.
Other possibilities are the area between Dunkin Donuts and Route 12, between Our Lady of
Lourdes Church and the Ocean State Job Lot plaza and Puerto Lima and Route 12.
Concerns with these areas are getting permission from the property owners. Ocean State Job Lot
mentions sustainability on their website and this would tie in with that. Chairperson Kohrs said
maybe the Businesses would pay for the plants and the Committee could do the work. Ms.
Hawes said owner information can be found using the GIS system.
Ms. Hawes said that Parks and Recreation is perusing dedicating an area in honor of Paula
Crocker. During these discussions Scott Johnson Parks and Recreation Director said there may
be a bench available for the Committee to use for a dedication.
Chairperson Kohrs said that online someone was asking for a pretty place to take prom photos
and asked if there was a gazebo in Town. Ms. Hagerty said there is a gazebo in Glacier Park.
Maybe the Committee can add plants to the area surrounding the gazebo.
Murals - Maybe put one at Job Lot or Juliet W. Long School? Chairperson Kohrs suggested that
the Committee put out a call for artists to help with the mural.
Ms. Eastbourne said there is a sign for the Nathan Lester House near Bestway on Route 12 that
could use replacement. Chairperson Kohrs will speak to Doug Kelley who oversees the Nathan
Lester House. Also, the "Welcome to Ledyard" sign(s) could use updating.
Chairperson Kohrs will write and mail a grant request to The Rotary for a planting bed near
Puerto Lima on Route 12, Gales Ferry.
Chairperson Kohrs mentioned that there is a Gales Ferry District meeting on May 18, 2026.
Seed balls - Ms. Hawes suggested making the balls during the Back to School Bash on August
22, 2026, from 3-7 p.m.
The Committee reviewed the Parks and Recreation themes, none of them were appropriate to the
Committee. Chairperson Kohrs suggested the Farmers market, although it wasn't very successful
last year.
The idea of "random acts of beautification" was tossed around.
Another idea was holding a nominee for a beautification project. Possibly for someone who is
struggling to maintain their yard.

Any Other Old Business to Come before the Committee.
1.
Chairperson Kohrs is sending thank you cards with gift cards to the fill the dumpster winners
thanking them for their participation in the event.
Earth Day Recap - Chairperson Kohrs mentioned that she was disappointed that more people
didn't come to fill the dumpster.
Ideas for Earth Day 2027 -
- Ms. Hagerty suggested having road adoptions for clean-up next year, maybe businesses,
churches, groups, PTOs or residents could participate.
- A Town sponsored event that the transfers station would waive fees for Earth Day 2027.
- Find specific areas that need attention for cleanup.
- Encourage pictures from residents showing their garbage bags and prize for the most bags
filled.

VII. NEW BUSINESS
RESULT:
Garden Club Donation.
1.
Chairperson Kohrs said the Ledyard garden Club donated $100.00. Ms. Hawes asked if they had
contact information. Chairperson Kohrs volunteered to reach out to them again for a
collaboration. A thank you card will be sent. Chairperson Kohrs said the Garden Club is having
a plant sale next week and maybe she could speak to someone then.
