Ms. Eastbourne will ask if the revamping at Mikie's Garden at the Ledyard Animal Control was
ever completed, if not that may be something the LBC could help with.
Chairperson Kohrs said the Committee should think about doing four main seasonal events, for
example fall bulb planting. October 25 is designated for the daffodil planting event. Chairperson
Kohrs mentioned the $1,000 grant from the rotary Foundation earmarked for this event.
Site ideas such as the Bill Library and the Senior Center in Gales Ferry were discussed for the
250 crocus planting beds. Chairperson Kohrs will check with the Bill Library about the crocus
planting. The flowers will be colored blue and white and planted in the shape of "250",
preferably placed on a hill for visibility. After America 250 the area could be filled with more
crocuses to remove the "250" shape. Chairperson Kohrs asked the members if they wanted to
plant the crocuses on the same day as the daffodil planting or do it on a separate day. It was
decided to plant the crocuses on the following weekend (November 1), weather depending. The
planting events will both start at 10:00 a.m. Chairperson Kohrs will advertise for groups to
volunteer at the events. Ms. Eastbourne suggested asking the LBC Juniors.
Chairperson Kohrs suggested partnering with the Ledyard Garden Club for the winter wreath
event to combine resources. The Committee is looking for a contact person for the Garden Club.
Ms. Hawes said that the Back-to-School event is on August 23 from 3:00-7:00 p.m. and
Community Groups are encouraged to hold events such as bowling, coloring, seed or bulb
planting geared towards elementary age students. An idea was shared for the students to create a
handprint flower poster, to be given to the schools after the event. Ms. Eastbourne suggested
checking with the schools first to see if they have somewhere to hang the posters up after the
event. Ms. Kohrs will think about a "plant a seed" project and will let the Committee know.
The LBC Farmer's market tent is scheduled for September 17 from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Ms.
Eastbourne will not be able to attend. Ms. Eastbourne suggested that the Committee hands out a
list with LBC event information that volunteers are needed for as well as post it on social media.
It was decided that the Committee will back out of the Farmer's market event.
