Chairperson Kohrs reviewed upcoming events;
Daffodil planting day is on October 17, 2026, along Colonel Ledyard Highway. The meeting
spot will be the Library at 10:00 a.m. The rain date is October 24, 2026. Chairperson Kohrs said
it is very rocky so the Committee must think about the best method of planting the bulbs and
what equipment is needed.
Fall Planting Class at the Library. Ms. Hawes contacted the Garden Club about collaborating for
the class, she is waiting for a call back. Ms. Winkelman suggested contacting a local farmer,
such as Full Hart Farms if the Garden Club isn't interested. It was also suggested to contact the
Agri-Science department at the High School. Other possible locations suggested were the High
School or the Town Green.
There is a Rotary Club event on the upper Town Green on August 5, 2026. The Committee will
not be able to attend this year but will keep it in mind for next year. Perhaps purchase a banner
for the Committee to use at events like this.
LEAF Back to School Bash on August 22, 2026, 3:00 p.m. at 7:00 p.m. on the lower Town
Green. This event is rain or shine since it is under the pavilion. Ms. Barber and Ms. Winkelman
volunteered to help at the event. The Committee will either hold a planting craft or give a take
home planting craft. Ms. Hawes will provide details of the Committee's space once the date is
closer. The BOA is providing tables and chairs for the event. The Committee will hand out flyers
for the Daffodil Planting Event the Veterans Day signs at the Bash. It was asked how many
people attended this event last year, Ms. Hawes said last year there were approximately 275
children and 1,300 in total.
Veteran Day Signs - Chairperson Kohrs spoke with Thirty Marketing to let them know that she
wants to start the event earlier this year. Ms. Hawes said she will contact Fleet and Family to see
if they are interested in a collaboration. Chairperson Kohrs will create a flyer with a QR code.
Ms. Hawes said she can share it with Ryan Landry, Ledyard Veterans Representative.
Chairperson Kohrs displays the signs the First Day after Election Day, which gives a full week
of display before Veterans Day.
Mural - Brainstorming where to do a mural; Village Market, Valentinos, The Food Pantry Barn,
Town Green pavement or pavilions, Juliet W. Long School. Ms. Eastbourne suggested the
Animal Control Building. Approval may be easier if the mural is on a private building. Ideas of
what to paint; a Ledyard themed mural similar to Groton's, children focused for the School,
Butterfly wings, hopscotch or flowers. Sponsors? Surface preparation? Suggestion to contact
other towns with murals to get advice and/or guidance. Chairperson Kohrs will reach out to the
Chairperson of the Groton and Groton City Beautification Committees.
Robin Perkins was present at 6:13 p.m. Ms. Perkins found a comprehensive guide and checklist
for outdoor murals, she will send the information to the Committee members. Ms. Hawes
suggested an interactive mural for the School that will get the children involved by touching or
jumping, etc. The Committee decided that it would be best to start with a mural at JWL. Ms.
Perkins suggested painting a mural to show the real-life height of things, animals etc.
Chairperson Kohrs said she will arrange a meeting with the principal and the Board of Education
to see how to proceed. Ms. Winkelman will contact the artist(s) who painted the Groton mural.
